BAHAMA ONE BY STUDIO PORSCHE: THE PARASOL AS A DESIGN STATEMENT

20 APRIL 2024

Play the video. Video Duration:1:16 min.

In the world of contemporary outdoor design, where construction quality and aesthetics are increasingly intertwined, Bahama One emerges as a new benchmark: a premium parasol by Bahama, designed by Studio F. A. Porsche. Unveiled on 18 February 2024 at the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart, the project brings together function, innovation and formal rigour in an object conceived to stand apart through restraint rather than excess.

More than a simple sunshade, Bahama One reinterprets the parasol as a genuine architectural presence. Its lines are essential, its technology discreetly integrated, and the overall design conceived to settle naturally into terraces, high-end hospitality environments and outdoor spaces in which every element contributes to the quality of the project. Its distinctive character reflects the vision of Studio F. A. Porsche, which brings its own design principles to the product: formal purity, mechanical precision and a measured elegance that is recognisable without ever becoming ostentatious.

The collaboration with Bahama began with a precise challenge: to transform a product of considerable technical complexity into an object capable of expressing a strong and coherent identity. The result is a carefully calibrated balance in which sophisticated engineering remains concealed behind a clean, harmonious profile. At the heart of the project, the power-assisted opening and closing system is more than a functional solution; it becomes an integral part of the user experience, making operation fluid, intuitive and exceptionally refined.

One of the most compelling qualities of Bahama One is precisely this ability to simplify without diminishing. LED lighting integrated into the ribs, carefully shielded to reduce glare, helps create a refined and controlled atmosphere. Cables and electrical components are fully concealed within the structure, mast and base, preserving a clean, continuous and visually ordered appearance. Even the technical elements — fasteners, complex profiles and connections — are reduced to a visual minimum, almost disappearing from view.

Materials also play a central role. The canopy fabric, made from a high-quality textile manufactured in Germany, stands out for its aesthetic finish, precise tension and technical performance, contributing both to the elegance of the product and to its structural strength. Despite its understated appearance, Bahama One offers a high level of wind resistance, achieved through the integration of the membrane into the supporting structure and the high tension of the fabric. It is an object that appears simple, yet reveals its true premium nature through the quality of its engineering.

Made in Germany, available to order and produced as a limited edition, Bahama One will be offered in round and square versions measuring 4, 4.5 and 5 metres, with bespoke customisation available on request. This confirms its positioning: not merely an outdoor accessory, but an exclusive product designed for settings where aesthetic coherence, uncompromising quality and a discreet, contemporary interpretation of luxury are essential.

The launch event brought together international professionals and guests from the fields of architecture, design and outdoor installations, travelling from Europe, the United States and Japan, and confirmed the project’s international outlook. Among those representing Italy was D’Addazio srls. Guests were able to experience the fluid operation of the power-assisted mechanism first-hand and appreciate exclusive details such as the integrated concealed key, designed to secure the use of the parasol without compromising its formal clarity.

With Bahama One, outdoor design evolves towards a more essential and considered idea of elegance: less decoration, more quality; fewer effects, greater substance. A design that does not need to impose itself in order to leave a lasting impression.

The history of Studio F. A. Porsche

The history of Studio F. A. Porsche adds further depth to the project. The studio was founded in Stuttgart in 1972 by Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, designer of the legendary Porsche 911. Two years later, it relocated to Zell am See in Austria, where it continued to develop product design, mobility design and spatial design projects for international clients. From the outset, its approach has been guided by a clear principle: to achieve an authentic synthesis of form and function through an essential, precise design language conceived to endure over time.
